For the Love of... Books

My sister posted this same list to her blog a while ago, and I came across it again today on a friend's facebook page. So, because I am already copying her post, I may as well do it all the way. The boldface titles are the ones I have read, and the boldface underlined ones are books I would read again. The italicized ones are books I would like to read someday. And to be slightly different, I made the ones I disliked red, and my favorites are in blue.

Tagline: The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books here. How do your reading habits stack up?

1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien

3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling
5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
6 The Bible - If I said I read the Bible, it would mean I read the whole thing, but I have read some of it. J
7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
8 Nineteen Eighty Four - George Orwell (Interesting, but I couldn’t sit through reading it again)
9 His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman
10 Great Expectations - Charles Dickens
11 Little Women - Louisa M Alcott
12 Tess of the D’Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy
13 Catch 22 - Joseph Heller

32 David Copperfield - Charles Dickens
33 Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis
34 Emma - Jane Austen
35 Persuasion - Jane Austen
36 The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe - CS Lewis - Technically, this is redundant, because it is one of the chronicles of Narnia. Albeit, the most famous one, but if you put one of them in separate, shouldn’t they all be in separate?
37 The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini
38 Captain Corelli’s Mandolin - Louis De Bernieres
39 Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden
40 Winnie the Pooh - AA Milne
41 Animal Farm - George Orwell - Don’t get me started on how much I HATE this book.
42 The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown
43 One Hundred Years of Solitude - Gabriel Garcia Marquez
44 A Prayer for Owen Meaney - John Irving
45 The Woman in White - Wilkie Collins
46 Anne of Green Gables - LM Montgomery

50 Atonement - Ian McEwan
51 Life of Pi - Yann Martel
52 Dune - Frank Herbert
53 Cold Comfort Farm - Stella Gibbons
54 Sense and Sensibility - Jane Austen
55 A Suitable Boy - Vikram Seth - biggest book I have ever seen- I debated reading it, but decided with that many pages, there’s probably a lot of work involved in reading it…
56 The Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafon
57 A Tale Of Two Cities - Charles Dickens
58 Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
59 The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime - Mark Haddon
60 Love In The Time Of Cholera - Gabriel Garcia Marquez
61 Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
62 Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov
63 The Secret History - Donna Tartt
64 The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold
65 Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas
66 On The Road - Jack Kerouac
67 Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy
68 Bridget Jones’s Diary - Helen Fielding
69 Midnight’s Children - Salman Rushdie
70 Moby Dick - Herman Melville – another “parts of it” book. Really descriptive, to the point it was hard to read.
71 Oliver Twist - Charles Dickens
72 Dracula - Bram Stoker
73 The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett – Love this story, but I have never read the book.
74 Notes From A Small Island - Bill Bryson
75 Ulysses - James Joyce
76 The Inferno - Dante - read parts of it for school. I would like to read the whole thing just because it is such a foundational literary masterpiece.
77 Swallows and Amazons - Arthur Ransome
78 Germinal - Emile Zola
79 Vanity Fair - William Makepeace Thackeray
80 Possession - AS Byatt
81 A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens

91 Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad
92 The Little Prince - Antoine De Saint-Exupery
93 The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks
94 Watership Down - Richard Adams - Like my sister, this movie (a cartoon we picked out because we thought it was about cute little bunnies) scared me to death as a child…
95 A Confederacy of Dunces - John Kennedy Toole
96 A Town Like Alice - Nevil Shute
97 The Three Musketeers - Alexandre Dumas
98 Hamlet - William Shakespeare
99 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Roald Dahl
100 Les Miserables - Victor Hugo

I have read 47 of these in their entirety. Therefore, I believe the BBC is wrong. Most people have probably had more than 6 of them just in school, and a lot of them are popular so most people have probably read more than 6.

A few books that I have read that are not on the list, but that I liked a lot, were :

1 The Giver- Lois Lowry

2 The Scarlett Letter

3 Anything by Jen Lancaster, although I am sure her books would not be considered “Literature”

4 Anything by Jodi Picoult. My favorite so far was The Pact, though it is incredibly sad and hard to get through at some points. Second I guess would be the newest one, Handle With Care.

So like I said, the ones in italics are books I would like to read, so if anyone wants to let me borrow their copies, I could trade one of the ones I have read.

I LOVE ANIMAL FARM but hate pride and prejudice so its equal. Also, read The Little Prince. I read it this year in French class but they have it in English, too. It is so so so so good. I have quotes from it hanging around my room.

Haha, but if only there were sports books on the list.

But, my real comment: please let me borrow some Jodi Picoulut books - I almost bought one the other day, but realized you probably have them all.

Also, I took a break from Jen Lancaster but amd finally reading the one you got me for Christmas. So. Funny. I was laughing out loud on the plane. Which is a little embarrassing.
